Press Report - 11th June 2007
The week ended on a very high note for Berkhamsted Bowls Club with wins for both the men & ladies teams in their respective competitions. 3 rinks of men secured an overall win of 54-49 at Kitcheners on Friday evening in the 1st round of the McMullen Cup. Top rink skipped by Colin Cormack included Frank Cutting, Bill Sharpling and Wally Dunn. On a sultry Saturday morning the ladies team beat St Albans ladies in the third round of National Top Ten competition. Carole Dunn kept ahead of her opponent in the singles to win 21-18. Mary Millar and Lesley Brown, after their opponents drew level, won the 21st end to give Berkhamsted another point in the pairs. Just half a point was needed from either the triples or fours teams to secure victory. Edie Coxhill, Alice Biggs & Anne Furlong, skipped by Marcia Pearce had trailed their opponents throughout their game but the friples team of Judy Kenyon, Mary Clarke and Jackie Cormack held their opponents to a draw when Jackie fired out her opponents’ woods in a thrilling last few minutes. Jackie continued her successful day by skipping the top rink with John Lythgoe and Derek Sandford in the friendly triples match at Harperbury in the afternoon. The Berkhamsted visitors were successful on all four rinks, winning the match 97 - 45.
On Sunday there was much hilarity and banter when the men & women in the club were pitched against each other in the annual Gemini Top Twelve sponsored by Peter Batchelor, owner of Gemini Printers. The match was all square after the morning’s pairs and in the afternoon the ladies led after first 6 singles matches but the final 6 singles were taken by the men and once again they won the day. Monies given by club members for both the spider and the excellent lunch donated by the Sponsor will be given to the Hospice of St Francis.
Other successes during a busy week for Berkhamsted bowlers included wins on both league and friendly rinks in Watford & District Ladies League. Mary Garner, Jane Low and Beryl Parsons won through to next round of Watford & District two wood triples. There was a win in the Stockman-Winser St. Albans & District competition for Jackie & Colin Cormack with Lesley & David Brown against a Hemel quartet. Marcia Pearce won through to next round of County Singles after beating Jean Rutland from Owls on Friday evening. Kevin Clarke & David Brown are through to next round after winning 3rd round match of the County Pairs. Terry Kenyon had a successful week with a singles win against Alan Read of Watford BC to reach 3rd round of Watford & District singles and pairs wins with partner John Webb to reach next rounds in both Watford & District and St Albans & District pairs competitions. Frank Cutting & Ken Maynard now meet a Potten End pair after their win at Herts Club in the Watford & District Pairs.
On Tuesday Jackie Cormack and Marcia Pearce played in the Hertfordshire Women’s County side who drew with Sussex WBA at Worthing Pavilion.
