A wet and windy Bank Holiday Monday caused the annual Berkhamsted Mixed Triples Gala to be called off by the end of the morning. Declared winners at that stage was a Pinner trio skipped by Jim Price. In spite of the adverse weather conditions and crowded clubhouse, many stalls successfully raised money for both the Club and the Hospice of St Francis.
As the weather improved during the week, success for Berkhamsted in friendly matches continued as the home side beat visitors Chess Vale on Wednesday evening by 70 shots to 48. Top rink went to Alice Biggs, Bill Sharpling and Nolan Biggs. Success again in a local derby against Hemel Hempstead B.C. on Saturday afternoon with a score of 116 to 77. Top rink was skipped by Mary Cave with Janet Jackson, John Lythgoe and Allan Dann. Berkhamsted completed the hat trick with a resounding win of 108 to 65 when they visited Aston Clinton on a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon. Top trio was Marion Maynard and Eric Millar skipped by Edie Coxhill.
Fellow club members David Brown and Wally Dunn had to play each other in the Watford & District singles on Tuesday evening with Wally running out the winner. David Brown was out on the green again the next evening in a Watford & District triples match versus Borehamwood, The Berko trio skipped by Colin Cormack and led by Kevin Clarke were the run-away winners after a slow start.
Other successes for Berkhamsted Club members included Clarke & Brown progressing to the 3rd round of the County Pairs and also the next round of Watford & District Pairs. On Friday evening Ken Maynard won a closely fought match in the District singles competition.
