Press Report - 25th June 2006
Berkhamsted Vice Captains, Mary Clarke and David Lovett, hosted this years Vice Captains day with a bowls match based on the World Cup. Teams of 4 were allocated a country and provided with that country's colours. Teams were drawn into 2 groups with each team playing four matches. Three points were awarded for a win and one point for a draw. Top point scorers from each group then played a "World Cup Final" competing diagonally across the green to a centrally placed jack. The group winners were Holland for group A represented by Rita Wellam, Frank Furlong, Alan Parsons and Mary Lamb. The overall World Cup winners were group B winners Sweden who were represented by Amanda Cox, John Shotton, Jackie Cormack and Alan Medland. The referee for this tournament was Wally Dunn, who produced yellow and red cards with a regularity that would have made Graham Poll envious! Each yellow card cost the culprit 50p for the Hospice of St. Francis fund, a and a red card cost 50p and a one shot penalty. These fines plus a spider raised £65.65 toward this years Hospice fund raising.
