Press Report - 3rd September 2006
Colin Cormack had a great weekend when he became the Watford and District mens singles champion with a convincing 21 - 8 win over Mike Sooby of Garston bowls club at Harperbury on Saturday. Both players were neck and neck during the early part of the game, but Colin suddenly hit a purple patch and ran away for a comfortable win.
Ken Maynard just missed out on a District title when he lost narrowly to Ted Pentacost of Harpenden BC in the final of the St. Albans and District singles.
Two rinks of Berkhamsted men also failed to land the St. Albans and District Jones Cup, losing on aggregate by 9 shots to St Albans Townsend B C. One rink of Bill Sharpling, Alan Parsons, John Webb and Terry Kenyon got off to a wretched start, falling 21 shots behind. They then fought back and closed to within 6 shots of their opponents before they ran out of ends. The other rink of Eric Lamb, Kevin Clarke, David Brown and Colin Cormack, who had been neck and neck throughout the game, did their best to make up the deficit but also ran out of ends.
A mixed friendly against Tring B C also ended in defeat when 4 rinks lost 74 -87 the previous weekend, despite the efforts of top rink Brian Smith, Janet Saunders, Mary Garner and Ken Maynard who just pipped Doris Mills, Paul Cox, Derek Saunders and Kevin Clarke on ends won.
Better news during the week, with a 4 rink mixed friendly win against Chalfont St. Giles B C. by 88 shots to 72. Top rink was won by Mary Garner, Alan Dann, Lyle Scott-Darling and Mary Clarke.
