Berkhamsted Bowls Club has had a good start in National competitions this week with Carole Dunn and Edie Coxhill recording a good win against a pair from Sele Farm in the 1st round of the Over 55's Pairs.  Also, Ken and Marion Maynard, along with Frank and Ann Cutting progressed to the next round of the National Mixed Fours competition.

In County competitions the men secured victory in the 1st round of the McMullen Trophy by beating Hemel Hempstead after an extra end.  During an evening plagued by intermittent rain and poor visibility, Berko eventually ran out winners after all 3 rinks had to play an extra end when the score was tied at 52 apiece.  Berkhamsted are at home to Garston in the 2nd round.

David Brown won his 1st round County singles tie. beating John Cameron of Kings Langley 21-17 in a nip-and-tuck contest.

In the St. Albans & District pairs, Ken Maynard and Frank Cutting progressed to the 2nd round and Ken also won his preliminary round match of the St. Albans & District singles.

Berkhamsted had a splendid mid-week friendly against Townsend, emerging winners by 66 shots to 31.  The top rink was Dave Sear, Eric Lamb and Anne Furlong.

On Thursday, a three rink ladies friendly fixture against Tring saw the Berkhamsted ladies come out on top, winning by 54 shots to 48.  Berkhamsted's top rink was Doris Mills, Beryl Parsons, Mary Lamb, and skip Mary Cave.

On Sunday Berko entertained 5 rinks of triples from Bushey but this time the home team could not secure a victory, losing by 89 shots to 63.  Berkhamsted's top rink on this occasion was Pauline Medland, Geoff Gibbs and Mike Low
