Success has continued for the Berko Ladies in the County League, with the team of Carole Dunn; Jackie Cormack; Anne Furlong and skip Mary Clarke recording a fine 23 shot to 13 win against Kings Langley. Unfortunately the friendly rink of Edie Coxhill; Janet Jackson; Anne Cutting and skip Janice Murgatroyd found their opposition a bit to strong and went down 27:14.
In the Watford & District, Leslie Ward-Hersee; Mary Walsh and skip Beryl Parsons won their triple match with an impressive score line of 27 shots to 8. Ken Maynard maintained his fine run with a 21 shot to 10 victory in the W & D singles over a very strong player from Kitcheners. He now plays in the semi-final on the 11th of August.
Berko are still represented in three St Albans & District competitions. In the singles Eric Lamb made it through to the quarter-finals with a fine 21 shot to 8 win over a player from Harpenden. Ken Maynard recorded an identical score line when he visited Townsend and also now plays in the quarter-final. The third success came in the four's with Eric Lamb; Peter Moore; Colin Cormack and skip Tony Perry going through to the semi-final thanks to an convincing 27 shot to 7 victory at Townsend.
On Sunday it was the turn of Berko's men and women to do battle in the annual Captains Day encounter. 7 rinks of men, under captain Alan Parsons, faced the daunting prospect of withstanding the might of the Berko ladies under the command of Ladies Captain - Mary Clarke. Alan's generalship and strategies obviously proved the better with the men winning the day by 169 shots to 96. Top men's rink was Alan Medland; Eric Challis; Frank Dellamuro and skip Derek Cox with a score of 36 : 4. Top ladies rink was Rachel Hazzard; Connie Tew; Janet Jackson and skip Mary Cave who won by 24 shots to 17. The serious winners of this hugely enjoyable day were two charities, and the two captains - Alan and Mary, had great pleasure in presenting a cheque for £819 to Roger Sharp of The Hospice of St. Francis. The second beneficiary was The Multiple Sclerosis Society who receive a cheque for £60 as a result of monies raised playing a spider competition prior to the start of the match.
