As the Bowls Season prepares for the closing stages of District and County competitions, there have been further notable achievements for Berkhamsted Bowls Club.

After successfully competing in the early stages of the County 2 wood championship held at 4 venues, Anne Furlong achieved a memorable victory over last year's winner, Mavis Hendry from Bushey. In the semi-final played at Townsend, Anne got off to a good start, claiming  5 shots in the first 3 ends and after this was never behind, eventually winning 15 - 9 in 19 ends. Anne now goes on to represent Hertfordshire for the second time at the National Championships at Leamington in August. The title of Herts Ladies 2 Wood Champion will be determined when Anne plays in the County Finals against England International and Commonwealth Games representative, Shirley Page of Baldock, in September.

.Another major success was in the National Mixed Pairs, when Ken and Marion Maynard won the area final of this demanding competition. They got the better of a very strong pair from Harpenden with a score of 21 shots to 11 in a match played at Kitcheners. Ken and Marion now go on to the Regional Finals on the 31st August, where the last 48 pairs will fight it out to the finish.

Ken continued his winning ways with partner Frank Cutting in the Watford & District pairs with a 23 shots to 20 victory over a pair from Herts B.C. Not content with that, Ken then went on to win his St Albans and District Singles with an emphatic 21 shot to 7 score line to reach the third round.

In the Stockman-Winser Trophy, Mary Cave; Jackie Cormack; Colin Cormack and skip Terry Kenyon recorded a fine 23 - 18 win over a four from de Havilland to progress to the semi-final. This to be played at Canal Fields against a team from Harperbury before 2nd August.

In the Watford & District singles, Eric Lamb's visit to Welwyn Garden City proved very fruitful. This match was very closely contested with some fine bowling from both players. Eric managed to maintain his good form and eventually won by 21 - 19 to progress to quarter-finals.

On Sunday Berko entertained, and got the better of, Chalfont St Giles in a 5 rink mixed match. Top rink was Murray Parkins; Paul Murgatroyd; Len Scott and skip Anne Furlong who contributed to the overall winning score line of 108 shots to 85.
