Press Report - 17th August 2003
On Saturday Berkhamsted visited Hazells at Aylesbury for a 5 rink mixed triples match. Initially the Berko bowlers found the lightening quick green very difficult to handle. By the half way stage the visitors were beginning to master the pace of the green and the match was evenly balanced. At the finish Berkhamsted had won on four of the five rinks and recorded an overall win by 96 shots to 73. Top rink was Jim Fulton (playing his first game for the Club); Geoff Wheatley; and skip Edie Coxhill with a score of 24 shots to 11.
Sunday was Gloynham Trophy Day at Berkhamsted. This all day mixed pairs annual fun competition involved 14 pairs playing in two pools with the winners and runner-up of each pool contesting a semi-final and final. With the competition starting at 10.00am and finishing at approx. 6.00pm and with each player using 3 woods, it became not only a test of bowling skill, but also a test of stamina.
This years final was contested by Beryl & Alan Parsons, and Margaret & Tony Perry, who by the finish had played 40 ends of bowls (120 woods each!). The 11 end final was very finely balanced with both pairs being on 9 shots going into the last end. Eventually it was the Perry's who won by the narrowest of margins to be this years Gloynham Trophy winners.
