Press Report - 15th June 2003
Saturdays glorious sunshine was matched by the colourful entertainment provided during the annual vice-captains encounter at Berkhamsted Bowls Club. It was the lady vice-captain's team of Anne Furlong that got the better of the stand-in Men's vice-captain team of Derek Cox. There were over 50 club members taking part and further sums were added to the clubs charity activities which continue throughout the season. Anne's top rink was Mary Garner; Len Scott; Mary Lamb and skip David Brown who won by 30 shots to 6, whilst Derek skipped his sides top rink (a triple) which included Mary Millar and Eric Lamb, who won by 19 - 8. After the match, over 70 club members enjoyed a magnificent meal provided by Anne Cox and her helpers.
County competitions provided happy hunting for Berko bowlers. In the County 4's, Eric Lamb; David Brown; Colin Cormack and skip Tony Perry progressed to the 2nd round with a hard won 25 shot to 21 victory at Garston. The triple of Alan Parsons; Wally Dunn and skip Bill Sharpling had a titanic struggle at Cassiobury finishing 20 shots each after the allotted 18 ends. It was the Berko trio that held their nerve, picking up 2 shots on the extra end to go through to the third round. Eric Lamb and Tony Perry progressed to the 4th round of the county pairs at the expense of a Hemel pair with a fine 25 - 10 win.
The Ladies enjoyed another good win in the County League, this time against Herts. With a score of 23 shots to 19 Edie Coxhill; Jackie Cormack; Anne Furlong and skip Mary Clarke had to fight hard to keep the winning sequence going. Mary Clarke had further success, this time in the County Singles with a 21 - 18 victory at Owls. In the County Pairs, Mary Millar and Jane Low achieved an impressive 21 - 6 victory over visitors from Cassiobury.
In the Watford & District, Ladies Captain Mary Clarke progressed to the next round of the Officers competition with an impressive 21 - 5 win over a Rickmansworth Officer. The two wood triples team of Mary Millar; Janice Murgatroyd and skip Lesley Brown entertained a trio from North Watford and won through to the next round. In the pairs Janet Dellamuro and Anne Cutting visited near neighbours Kitcheners and came away 24 - 19 victors. The men's pair of Eric Lamb and Tony Perry go through to the 3rd round with a 27 - 13 victory.
In the St Albans & District, the pair of Alan Dann and Alan Osborn got the better of a duo from Hatfield, winning by 20 shots to 14. In the District Singles, Ken Maynard progressed to the 2nd round at the expense of a fellow club member.
The Ray Cup produced a nail biting finish at Canal Fields, with the result in doubt right until the last wood was bowled. In spite of losing on two of the three rinks, it was Berkhamsted who won through by one shot against their old rivals from Herts BC. This was due to a magnificent performance by the rink of Peter Moore; Bill Sharpling; John Webb and skip Terry Kenyon who won by 29 shots to 12.
